This
is a desert airforce P-40E. I found a long discontinued Aeromaster sheet of the
RAF “desert airforce” shark squadron at a hobby shop in LA and have
fantasized about doing this for a while. Then the Hasegawa kit came out and all
my excuses evaporated. The quality of the kit is just wonderful especially since
its closest competitor; in my opinion, the AMT kit; comes pretty close at least
exterior wise.

The
construction was very straight forward. I was afraid the fuselage join
would give problems but it worked out fine after all. There was the
typical challenge with the rear scallop windows which were installed after
final painting and clear coating, but the result seemed OK. The model was
painted with the usual Gunze acrylic paint and weathered with an oil wash.
Gunze Sangyo does not have a specific color for the characteristic Azure
Blue the desert airforce typically applied to the undersides of its
aircraft so some mixing was required.
The
amateur photography was done with a Canon XSI with a 100mm macro lens in broad
daylight. Hope you enjoy the pics!
