These are 1/48
Revell Prowlers. Both have aftermarket cockpits, both by Black box. The grey and
white is from VAQ-135 and represents CVW-8 back on the 1977-78 Nimitz cruise.
This model had the cockpit go in with no problems, but the wingfolds from
Paragon gave me no end of trouble. The resin was VERY brittle and parts were
breaking off with every turn. The decals used are from the massively wonderful
Aeromaster CVW-8 1977-78 cruise sheet (Thanks Sony K). This was in fact the last
model of the 8 supplied on the sheet that I needed to finish.
The wingfold was not
very stable one the first attempt so I had to find something to help hold up the
wing. Well....in reading some old books I noticed a lot of Intruders used what
looked like metal support rods attached to the wing root. I figured in 1/48
scale a couple of old bent airbrush needles might do the trick. I cut them to
size, painted them red, drilled holes in the wings and glued it all in place.
They seem secure now. All I can hope is these support beams were also used on
Prowlers and not just Intruders.

The second Prowler
(500) was done a few years ago. The cockpit (BB) was not a good fit at the time.
But I am thinking that my fault as the newer model fit like a glove. (Not an OJ
Simpson style glove but a nice one)
The decals are Eagle
Strike and represent a VAQ-141 from CVW-8 on the Enterprise in 2001.
I'm thinking this might be
the last Prowler I do. They are getting rather hard to find of late.
